History

International Relations Study Program is one of the first study program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta with the guidance of the Department of International Relations of Universitas Gadjah Mada, especially Prof. Dr. Amien Rais. International Relations Study Program of UMY is also becomethe first IR Study Program in the private university of Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. This study program became an alternative to students who wanted to study Bachelor of International Relations program that was only available in a few Public University with low capacity.

Registered status obtained in 1985 in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia no. 0417 / O / 1985 concerning Provision of Registered Status at Several Faculties at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. In 1992, the IR Study Program gained recognized status and in 1995 the status was Equated. With the updated accreditation model, IR Study Program earned “A” from National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN PT) and the status is maintained in 2004.

With the A accreditation, IR Study Program strives to create graduates that are relevant to the needs of external stakeholders (including national and multinational companies, Department of Foreign Affairs and other government agencies, research and teaching institutions, the press, and society in general). For example of that effort was the improvement of the curriculum in 2004 and enacted the academic year 2005/2006, the implementation of the international classes since 2005/2006, and the internship program for students since 2004.
